Veteran Nigerian actor and film executive, Oludotun Baiyewu Jacobs, popularly known as Olu Jacobs, has died at the age of 84.
Jacobs reportedly died in the early hours of Wednesday, September 16, 2026.
His death was announced by his son, Olusoji Jacobs, in a statement shared on Instagram on Wednesday.
The family described the late actor as a beloved husband, father, grandfather and uncle, while appealing to the public to respect its privacy as it mourns his passing.
The statement read: “It is with gratitude to God for a life well lived and fought, that we announce the passing of our dear husband, father, grandfather and uncle. The Lion of Lufodo.
“Oludotun Baiyewun Jacobs (MFR) 11/07/1942–16/09/2026. We call on all bloggers and social media influencers to respect our family’s privacy at this time.”
Born on July 11, 1942, Olu Jacobs built a career spanning theatre, television and film, becoming one of the most recognisable figures in Nigeria’s entertainment industry.
He developed an interest in acting at an early age before travelling to the United Kingdom, where he trained at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London.
His early professional career included stage performances and appearances in British television productions and international films.
After returning to Nigeria, Jacobs became a prominent figure in the country’s developing film industry, featuring in numerous productions and earning acclaim for his commanding screen presence and ability to portray complex and authoritative characters.
Beyond acting, he also played a significant role in the development of Nigeria’s performing arts sector.
Together with his wife, veteran actress Joke Silva, he was involved in the Lufodo Group and the Lufodo Academy of Performing Arts, which was established to contribute to the development of theatre, film and the training of young talents.
Jacobs’ career earned him widespread recognition in Nigeria and beyond, with his work leaving a lasting mark on the country’s theatre and film industries.
His death marks the end of a career that spanned several decades and helped shape generations of Nigerian actors and filmmakers.
